Food security is defined as when all residents in a community have access to a sufficient quantity of nutritious and affordable food, and the ability to purchase that food. Kings County is very fortunate to be a richly agricultural area in rural Nova Scotia, producing a wide variety of food. However, not everyone is fortunate enough to have food security. In Kentville alone, 1 in 6 citizens live with food insecurity – from Canada Without Poverty 2015. Brains work better when bellies are full of nutritious food. Food security is a mental health issue.
